KZN special needs schools face possible closure next year: SANASE

The South African National Association for Special Education (SANASE) says there is a big chance that special needs schools in KwaZulu-Natal might not operate next year. This is due to unresolved funding, staffing and infrastructure challenges.

In its recent meeting, SANASE highlighted the dire state of special needs schools in the province.

The association says that despite commitments made by the provincial government, no action has been taken to resolve these issues.

SANASE’s Deputy Chairperson, Khetha Khumalo says the office of Premier and MEC promised to come back to them with service delivery, but they’ve never done that as they are still facing challenges.

“The Office of the Premier, as well as the Office of the MEC in Education, promised to come back to us with service delivery according to our demands. From there they never came back so for now we are still seating in the dark place, we are still facing the challenges in our special schools so we have taken the decision to say we don’t see us operating next year in January so our schools will remain closed so we took that decision.”
