South Africa's first black women-led Mutual Bank to launch next week
South Africa is set to witness a pivotal moment in its financial landscape with the official launch of eNL Mutual Bank next week – the country’s newest fully licensed mutual bank that is majority black women-owned and women-led.
Evolving from the successful six-year legacy of the YWBN Co-operative Financial Institution, eNL Mutual Bank is poised to redefine financial inclusion and community empowerment under the leadership of its founder, Nthabeleng Likotsi.
“eNL Mutual Bank is more than a bank. It is a response to generations of exclusion and an opportunity for South Africans to participate meaningfully in the financial system,” Likotsi told IOL on Wednesday.
“We are not just launching a bank – we are launching ownership, dignity, and economic vision.”
The bank is set to officially launch on Wednesday next week in Sandton, with the event streamed live across all social media platforms.
Likotsi emphasised that the bank’s mission is deeply rooted in addressing historic economic disparities by expanding access to fair financing, supporting the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMMEs), and providing affordable housing-linked products to underserved communities.
In doing so, eNL aims to bridge the gap between formal banking institutions and informal sectors, fostering community wealth that can be sustained and passed down through generations.
“eNL Mutual Bank belongs to its people,” Likotsi explained. “This bank will not be driven by distant shareholders. It will be guided by South Africans who want a financial institution they can trust, shape, and own.”
Operating entirely as a digital institution, eNL Mutual Bank aims to reduce operating costs while delivering affordable, accessible banking tailored to the unique needs of local communities.
Its infrastructure prioritises speed, compliance, and security, ensuring that as the bank embraces technological innovation, it remains deeply connected to the people it serves.
The launch of eNL Mutual Bank signals a decisive shift toward greater financial inclusion led by black women entrepreneurs, setting an inspiring example for SMMEs across South Africa and beyond.
