Teens face criminal charges after knife attack on dog
Three teenagers from Kirstenhof are facing criminal charges after allegedly stabbing a local dog in a disturbing act of cruelty, Daily Voice has reported.
Zia, a four-year-old female brindle crossbreed, was attacked at approximately 3.08pm on 8 December. Her owner, Jonathan Nel, returned home shortly before 4pm to discover her with “a large knife protruding from her nose”.
Nel rushed Zia to the SPCA in Grassy Park, where emergency x-rays revealed that the blade had penetrated deeply into her right nasal cavity.
By 4.31pm, SPCA inspectors, supported by Kirstenhof Crime Watch (KCW), had analysed CCTV footage from the neighbourhood and identified three suspects — all aged between 16 and 17 years.
According to the SPCA, the footage and subsequent evidence prompted the teenagers to confess their actions to their parents, who then accompanied them to apologise to Zia’s owner.
Following discussions with the SPCA, the parents took the youths to SAPS Kirstenhof. Initial claims by the suspects that the stabbing had been in self-defence have been dismissed by the SPCA as baseless, citing the strength of the available evidence.
The SPCA praised the parents for acting responsibly and facilitating accountability.
Zia underwent surgery to remove the blade after detailed x-rays were used to map its position. She remains under close veterinary care.
The investigation is being supported by the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement and the Safety and Security Investigations Unit (SSIU). A comprehensive criminal docket — including sworn affidavits, photographic and video evidence, and veterinary reports — has been submitted to the police.
SPCA Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse condemned the attack, stating: “This was an act of horrific cruelty. Our inspectors acted swiftly and will pursue the matter to its fullest legal conclusion. Accountability must follow. I commend the parents who chose to bring their sons to SAPS. Violence cannot be excused, and actions must carry consequences.”
