Two teenagers arrested for disarming and robbing taxi driver

Two 16-year-old minors have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Happy Dam, Acornhoek, Mpumalanga.

Police said the robbery occurred on Friday when a 43-year-old man was allegedly accosted by four armed suspects after arriving home in his taxi.

According to police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, the victim had parked outside his yard and was getting out of the vehicle when the suspects approached him, held him at gunpoint and robbed him of his pistol and an undisclosed amount of cash.

“Whilst getting out of the car, four armed males are said to have approached him, then held him at gunpoint and disarmed him of his pistol. It is further alleged that the suspects robbed him of cash,” said Nonyane-Mpe.

“A case was subsequently opened, and two of the suspects, who are minors, both aged 16, were apprehended. Police are working collaboratively with probation officers as suspects are underage.”

She added that the minor suspects were also found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Because the suspects are underage, police are working closely with probation officers, who will facilitate their appearance at the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court.

The two remaining suspects are still at large.

Acting Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi said police were committed to ensuring that the remaining suspects are brought to justice.

“We urge all members of the community to report any information about crime to the police,” Mkhwanazi said.

Police investigations are continuing.
