Flash flooding has struck parts of the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast following intense rainfall that swept through the region late on Sunday afternoon, affecting areas including Margate and surrounding coastal towns.

Heavy downpours on Sunday led to water rapidly accumulating in streets, low-lying areas and drainage systems, resulting in roads being submerged and traffic being disrupted in several parts of Margate. Motorists were forced to navigate flooded routes, while residents reported water flowing into yards and commercial areas.

The South African Weather Service has warned that summer thunderstorms can lead to sudden flash flooding, particularly in coastal and urban areas where runoff builds up quickly.

At the time of reporting, no injuries or fatalities had been confirmed, but authorities continued to monitor conditions and assess any damage to infrastructure as water levels gradually receded in affected areas.

Videos and images shared on social media showed fast-moving surface water, vehicles partially surrounded by floodwater and stormwater systems struggling to cope with the volume of rain. Some businesses were temporarily affected as water pooled in parking areas and entrances.

Emergency services and local disaster management teams were placed on alert as the weather system moved through the South Coast. Residents were urged to avoid flooded roads and crossings, and to remain cautious as further rainfall was possible.
