171 children receive Christmas gifts through Mokopane community initiative

Smiles and excitement filled Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane, Limpopo on Christmas Day as 171 children from disadvantaged communities received gifts through the Kiddies Christmas Lunch initiative.

The initiative aims to bridge the gap between children from underprivileged backgrounds and those from more affluent families.

It seeks to ensure that needy children can also enjoy a meaningful Christmas experience.

Speaking to IOL News, initiative spokesperson Dipuo Modiba said the Kiddies Christmas Lunch programme was launched in 2021.

A total of 171 children from disadvantaged communities received Christmas Day gifts through the Mokopane-based Kiddies Christmas Lunch initiative in Limpopo.

“The Kiddies Christmas Lunch programme, launched in 2021 (originally named Kiddies Christmas Joy), was created with the primary goal of reducing the divide between affluent and underprivileged families in the community,” Modiba said.

“It provides children from disadvantaged backgrounds with a joyful gathering filled with fun activities, gifts and a shared meal of lovingly prepared Christmas treats and delicacies.”

In addition to receiving gifts, the children were also given food hampers and clothes.

The event was attended by the children, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), media representatives, religious leaders and other prominent community figures.

Modiba said the organisers plan to expand the programme in the coming years.

“For next year, we aim to serve an even larger number of children, gradually expanding the programme to further bridge the socioeconomic gap, depending on available resources,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to partners, including Mogalakwena Local Municipality and the South African Police Service, which he said have collaborated with the initiative every year since 2021.

“We would also like to thank our dedicated colleagues and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the event’s success each year,” Modiba said.
