Two young girls rescued from drifting lilo at Miller’s Point Beach

Two girls were rescued from Miller’s Point Beach on Saturday before 1 pm.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, the girls, aged 5 and 8, had reportedly been floating on a small lilo, which may have deflated.

NSRI Simons Town station commander, Darren Zimmerman, said family members tried to rescue them, but three bystanders managed to rescue the girls.

He said they initiated CPR efforts on the 5-year-old girl until paramedics arrived on scene.

The NSRI said the five-year-old from East Ridge and the 8-year-old from Hanover Park were transported to the hospital in a stable condition and are expected to make full recoveries.

NSRI commended the good Samaritans for their efforts that contributed to saving the lives of the 2 children.

Also on Saturday morning, a male surfer who had fallen off his surf-ski was rescued by the NSRI after being found floating in the water.

On Boxing Day, two men were rescued after they were blown out to sea at Millers Point.

The NSRI said the men had launched an inflatable craft to go fishing but were almost immediately caught in the strong winds, and they were unable to row back to shore against the wind.

Multiple eyewitnesses, including motorists on the coastal road, reported seeing the 2 men being blown out to sea, in the direction of Simons Town, from Miller’s Point, on what appeared to be a blow-up swimming pool inflatable craft.”

The men, aged 35 and 39, from Mitchells Plain, were safely rescued and reunited with their families.
