Former deputy minister Dikeledi Magadzi dies at 75

Former Deputy Minister of Transport and Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, as well as Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Agriculture, Health, and Safety and Security, Dikeledi Magadzi has died.

She was 75-years-old.

“The African National Congress is deeply saddened and mourns the passing of Comrade Dikeledi Magadzi, who passed away this morning, December 28, 2025,” ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bengu said.

Bengu described Magadzi as a committed leader and seasoned cadre of the ANC who served both the movement and the democratic state with dedication and discipline.

“She previously served as a member of the National Executive Committee and as a deputy minister, bringing a strong sense of public service and revolutionary commitment to every responsibility entrusted to her. Her contribution to governance and the movement was extensive,” Bengu said.

Magadzi served the people of Limpopo as MEC for Public Works, Agriculture, Health, and Safety and Security.

At national level, she was elected to the National Assembly, chaired the Portfolio Committee on Transport, and later served as Deputy Minister of Transport and Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation.

“Within the ANC and the broader liberation movement, comrade Magadzi was deeply rooted in mass democratic formations, including the Federation of Transvaal Women, the United Democratic Front, NEHAWU, the ANC Women’s League, and the establishment of the Congress of Traditional Leadership of South Africa (Contralesa),” Bengu added.

She served on the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) from 2007 to 2022, contributing to organisational work, political education, and leadership development.

The ANC extended its condolences to her family, including her children and grandchildren, as well as to comrades, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by her service.

“We call on all members and ANC structures to offer the Magadzi family the necessary support and to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult period,” Bengu said.

Further details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Magadzi was Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation from 5 August 2021 until 6 March 2023, and Deputy Minister of Transport from 29 May 2019 until 5 August 2021.

She previously served as MEC for Public Works (1994–1998), Agriculture (2004–2009), and Safety and Security (2009–2010) in the Limpopo provincial government.
