A Stormers pivot has committed to the club until 2029 after a strong start to the new season.
Jurie Matthee’s contract extension is another significant retention win for the Stormers as part of Project 2029, with the flyhalf repelling interest from clubs in South Africa and abroad to stay in Cape Town. His agent, Michael Thomas, confirmed to Netwerk24 that the decision was driven by the environment created at the franchise.
CHAMPIONS CUP POOL 3: Stormers, Leinster set pace
“Jurie is happy that he and the Stormers will continue on this journey together. There was a lot of interest in him from outside – locally and internationally – but the Stormers were always his first choice,” Thomas said.
“You can see in his performances that he is really enjoying the Stormers environment, in terms of the coaching he is receiving and the team culture.”
The 25-year-old has been a key figure in the Stormers’ early-season momentum, delivering control and composure in the No.10 jersey as the side made an unbeaten start across competitions. His impact was underlined in the opening round of the Vodacom URC, where he contributed 20 points in a commanding 35-0 win over Leinster.
STORMERS CEO: Something special happening
Thomas believes the new deal is a fair reflection of both form and influence.
“Jurie has been a regular starter for the Stormers this season and they have done very well with him at flyhalf. He is looking forward to the next few years with the Stormers,” he said.
