Gender-based violence: Husband arrested after woman beaten to death with wooden stick
A 45-year-old man has been arrested for murder following a domestic violence incident in which his partner was beaten to death in Calcutta, Mpumalanga, on Thursday morning.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the 37-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted with a wooden stick at the Mashonamini Trust at around 8 am.
Police said officers responded to a complaint of domestic violence and were led to a room where the woman was found lying on the floor with no signs of life. Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene, where they certified her dead.
The suspect later handed himself over to the police and was immediately arrested and charged with murder.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the suspect is expected to appear before the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
“The suspect handed himself over to the police and was immediately arrested. He will appear before the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 9 January 2026,” said Ndubane.
Meanwhile, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has expressed concern over the continued rise in domestic violence cases.
He reiterated that gender-based violence remains a serious challenge in the country. Mkhwanazi extended condolences to the family of the deceased woman.
“Gender-based violence will not be tolerated. Members of the public are urged to seek assistance when experiencing conflict or abuse in their relationships,” he said.
