From joke to reality: Two Gqeberha friends launch Dash Burgers in Pinelands
Two Gqeberha youngsters who once joked about opening a burger joint on a night out are now turning that joke into reality.
Calvin Volschenk, 22, and Matthew Cussé, 25, are set to cut the ribbon next month on their very own burger restaurant, Dash Burgers, in Pinelands.
The new eatery will also create jobs for six local staff, giving the Friendly City yet another reason to celebrate.
“We wanted to bring something new and exciting to town — and keep it local,” Volschenk said.
He said Gqeberha was an integral part of who they were.
“It is where we grew up, where our families and friends are, and where so many memories were made over simple meals shared,” he said.
“We wanted to create a place that feels like home — somewhere people can walk in, feel welcome, and enjoy honest food made with care.”
Volschenk, who shortly after finishing school started Liquid SA, an events company hosting parties for adults and alcohol-free events for minors, said he had always dreamed of being in the restaurant industry.
He started making burgers as a little boy, honing his craft long before the idea of Dash Burgers even existed.
“I remember trying to make my own little burgers for my friends growing up,” he said.
“Sometimes they were perfect, sometimes… not so much.
“But even then, it was the joy of making something with my hands and seeing others enjoy it that kept me going.”
Volschenk said it feels surreal to now be making and selling burgers from a restaurant he owns with his dear friend.
“These burgers are not just about great ingredients and bold flavours; they’re about community, late nights, laughter, and bringing people together around something familiar and comforting,” he said.
“This is our way of giving back to the town that gave us everything, one smash burger at a time.”
