Cheetahs to come out swinging

Frans Steyn admits the Cheetahs head into their final EPCR Challenge Cup pool match against Racing 92 in Paris surrounded by uncertainty, but will give it their all.
The Cheetahs have endured a bitterly disappointing campaign which saw them lose their opening two games against the Exeter Chiefs and Stade Français, before last Sunday’s match against Ulster in Amsterdam was snowed out.
The Free Staters also still don’t know if they will be in the competition next season or where they will play their home matches.
Both the Cheetahs and Racing 92 are playing for pride at the bottom of Pool 3, with the top four already qualified for the round of 16.
Neither side has registered a win, and Racing will also be eager to avoid finishing winless after drawing with Exeter earlier in the campaign.
“If it’s a win, it’s a win, and if it’s a loss, it’s a loss,” Steyn told Netwerk24. “But we’re going to come out swinging and play our style of rugby.”

Preparation has been far from ideal. The Cheetahs have not played for a month, while heavy snow in the Netherlands last week limited them to walk-through sessions rather than full training.
Steyn added there would be extra motivation facing his former club, for whom he made 59 appearances, but acknowledged the scale of the challenge if Racing produce their best.
“I’ve got a lot of confidence in our guys that we can achieve something special this weekend,” he said.

The disrupted campaign reached a frustrating low point when last week’s match against Ulster was cancelled shortly before kick-off after the pitch in ’s-Hertogenbosch was declared unplayable.
“In all my years in rugby, I’ve never experienced something like that,” Steyn said. “It was unique and incredibly disappointing.”
