March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma to hand herself over to the police

The March and March Movement says its leader and founder, Jacinta Ngobese Zuma, is facing imminent arrest after the South African Police Service (SAPS) reportedly decided to criminally charge her for inciting public violence against illegal immigrants.

March and March said it had received ‘interesting news’ that police intended to charge Ngobese-Zuma.

It framed the move as an attack on citizens advocating for the marginalised.

“We note the attitude of the State towards the South African citizens who are merely fighting for the rights of the disenfranchised and downtrodden people of South Africa,” the movement said.

Ngobese-Zuma intends to present herself to the police on Tuesday morning.

“Our leader is a law-abiding citizen and will hand herself over at the police station, in order to be formally charged and appear in court,” it said.

The alleged charges follow a series of protests led by March and March outside Addington Primary School in Durban.

The movement has repeatedly raised objections over the alleged admission of undocumented foreign nationals at the school.

The demonstrations, which drew heavy police presence and sparked widespread public debate, have been criticised by education authorities and civil society groups, while March and March has insisted the protests were peaceful and aimed at protecting the rights of South African learners.

March and March further accused authorities of selectively enforcing the law, claiming citizens were being arrested while criminal activity continued unchecked.

“We have come to a conclusion that indeed it is easy to arrest and abuse voters and taxpayers while foreign nationals, who are here illegally, continue to sell drugs and illicit goods unabated.”

The movement also issued a warning to what it termed ‘apartheid apologists’, vowing to continue its campaign despite the alleged impending legal action against its leader.
