Man fights for life after shooting incident at Westbrook Beach

A MAN in his late 30s is fighting for his life after sustaining a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at Westbrook Beach, yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon.

The shooting occurred on North Beach Road, where emergency services were dispatched following reports from the public of a gunshot being fired.

A licensed 9mm pistol was found a short distance from the scene. However, the events leading up to the shooting were not established.

Riza Sadack, chairperson of IPSS Search and Rescue Tongaat, said they had received multiple calls at 2pm alerting them to the incident.

He said IPSS Search and Rescue and Tongaat volunteers responded alongside other emergency services and found the man in a critical state.

“On arrival we found an adult male in his late 30’s, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and was in a critical condition,” he said.

According to Sadack, paramedics worked urgently to save the man’s life.

“Paramedics from IPSS and Netcare worked to stabilise the man before transporting him to an awaiting helicopter where he was airlifted to a medical facility.”

“The motive behind the shooting is unknown and will be investigated by SAPS,” Sadack said.
