Manhunt launched after 74-year-old headman killed in Limpopo village
Police in Limpopo have launched a manhunt after a 74-year-old headman was brutally killed in Mathukhumela Village on Monday, February 2.
The murder took place at about 6 pm.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, said police were called to the scene following a report of an attack at a local residence.
“Upon arrival, the members found the victim inside the house, tied up and lying in a pool of blood with multiple open wounds. He was certified dead at the scene.
The deceased was identified as Mr Ntshweng Joseph Ramphisa, 74, a well-known and respected headman of Mathukhumela Village,” Mashaba said.
According to police, a witness had seen a suspect leaving the home.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim’s relative was returning home when she noticed a white bakkie parked next to the gate and observed a male suspect exiting the house carrying a television set. Upon entering the house, she discovered the victim tied up and bleeding,” Mashaba said.
The witness also became a victim of the suspects.
“Another suspect then tied her up, while both suspects allegedly continued to assault the elderly man with a sharp object. The suspects later fled the scene. The relative sought assistance from members of the community,” Mashaba said.
The rooms in the rest of the home were also found ransacked.
“A case of murder and robbery has been opened. The suspects are still at large, and investigations are continuing,” Mashaba said.
