David Sejobe's funeral: South Africans gather in Limpopo to bid farewell to cheerful security officer
South Africans from across the country are gathering in a united show of grief as the funeral service of David Sejobe gets underway at Mukondeni Village in Limpopo today.
Sejobe, a much-loved MultiChoice security officer known for his warmth, humility and infectious smile, died last week after being struck by a vehicle in what is being investigated as a suspected hit-and-run incident while he was cycling to work.
His death sparked an outpouring of tributes nationwide, with colleagues, public figures and ordinary South Africans sharing memories of a man whose kindness and daily greetings left a lasting impression far beyond his workplace.
The 49-year-old security guard died after being struck by a vehicle while cycling to work along the Golden Highway.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the EFF described Sejobe as a hardworking and dedicated employee, who tirelessly supported his family under challenging conditions characteristic of the private security industry.
The EFF has campaigned for the insourcing of security guards, advocating that the current practice of outsourcing has perpetuated exploitation and denied workers essential benefits. “The treatment of security guards is a reflection of systemic injustices that must be addressed,” the statement read.
This incident has reignited criticism of the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA), which the EFF alleges has failed to protect employees and ensure their pension funds are secure.
The EFF has urged the motorist involved in Sejobe’s tragic accident to come forward and assist police with their inquiries. “The Sejobe family deserves answers and closure.”
The party also appealed to the public for any information that may help identify the driver.
