A conservation facility at Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo has received an international conservation award at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, for pioneering the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in environmental sustainability.

Already known as a leading conservation and ecotourism facility, the Cango Wildlife Ranch is ensuring that AI is trained on accurate, real-world conservation data, to understand, support and protect wildlife and ecosystems rather than harm them.

CEO of Cango Wildlife Ranch, Douglas Eriksen says, “Since I joined last year, a big focus of ours has been how can we future-proof our facility; and how can we future-proof conservation efforts. And one of the solutions that we’ve come up with is protecting against AI misalignment, and part of that is project Zoa’s solution that we’re introducing. For us on the facility, we’ve been very excited about it, and we think it’s going to help us establish ourselves as a key authority in the new space of conservation.”
