Silly error leads to arrest of BMW M4 driver who allegedly drove 204km/h, evaded police
A motorist was arrested after he sped away from traffic police and forgot his identification document with the RTI Team.
In a statement released on Monday, the KZN Department of Transport described what happened and how he was caught.
According to the statement, the motorist was stopped by the RTI Team after being caught driving at a staggering speed of 204km/h.
The motorist sped away from the scene, leaving his identification document with the RTI team.
“Thanks to the artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technology, which enabled the RTI to trace his movements to a Golf Estate on the South Coast. The high-resolution imaging and real-time data analytics revealed how he removed the registration number plates from his vehicle,” stated MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma.
The analysis further revealed another driver removing the vehicle from the Golf Estate. Critically, using an AI-driven system that detects, tracks and analyses the behaviour in real-time, the RTI team located him hiding in the golf estate’s villa.
The motorist was subsequently arrested.
Duma commended the Road Traffic Inspectorate team from Park Rayne for the motorist after a meticulous investigation that involved analysing footage.
“After his arrest, the motorist, from a Durban suburb, appeared in Scottburgh Magistrates Court to face charges of speeding, reckless driving and running away from traffic police.”
The motorist was granted R3000 bail and will make his next court appearance with his attorney on February 25, 2026.
