Louisa van Sensie fatally stabbed in Bonteheuwel, days after activist’s murder
Another woman has been killed in a fatal stabbing in Bonteheuwel on the Cape Flats.
This is the second stabbing in less than a week.
Louisa van Sensie, 58, was brutally stabbed on Sunday and died in the hospital.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, said Bishop Lavis SAPS members responded to a stabbing incident on Loganberry Street at around noon.
He said, according to reports, there was an altercation that led to the stabbing.
“According to reports, the suspect came to the deceased’s house looking for a friend. The deceased husband informed the suspect that his friend is asleep and that he is not going to wake him. The suspect got angry, and he attacked the husband with a knife. The deceased husband then also took a knife and retaliated.
“The deceased then tried to stop the fight, and she was also stabbed by the suspect in her shoulder. Both the suspect and the deceased were taken to the hospital, where the woman was declared deceased on arrival,” van Wyk said.
He added that the 25-year-old suspect was arrested and is under police guard, receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
Bonteheuwel Ward Councillor, Angus McKenzie, said Louisa knew her attacker, who has been condemned for this heinous crime.
“Any attack on a woman, regardless of the circumstances, must be met with the full force of the law. Violence against women is an absolute scourge on our communities and cannot be tolerated,” McKenzie said.
He also called for bail to be opposed once the suspect appears in court.
“He is a 24-year-old known gangster from the very same street where Louisa lived. We will strongly oppose any application for bail, including the formal bail proceedings likely to take place within the next 10 days,” McKenzie said.
Last week, Shireena Birch, a local community activist, was stabbed to death in her home in Assegaai Avenue.
Her husband has since been arrested for her murder.
“It is completely unacceptable that, after losing Shireena Birch to gender-based violence less than a week ago, our community is once again mourning the loss of another woman, Louis Van Sensie, under such brutal and senseless circumstances. This cannot become normal. It cannot be accepted,” McKenzie said.
Birch’s husband, Riedwaan, is expected to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, February 10, for a formal bail application.
