Godongwana to announce SABC support interventions: Ntshavheni
The Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says the Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will announce interventions to support the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) when he delivers his budget speech later this month.
The BMIT Knowledge Group has been appointed by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies to develop a funding model for the public broadcaster.
This is part of a broader effort to address the SABC’s financial sustainability and ensure its ability to fulfil its public service mandate.
Ntshavheni says, “The Minister of Finance will announce interventions that are being made to support the SABC, but the SABC needs to start to build its own financial viability models and that is important. So it’s important that the Parliament finalises the SABC Bill so that the SABC can be able to move on and deliver on that. But also, SABC needs to be able to move out of the analogue signals and go to digital signals. It will also significantly reduce its own costs.”
Minister Solly Malatsi announced that a revised version of the SABC Bill is set to be presented in Parliament after April this year.
