Ekapa Mine in Kimberley, Northern Cape, says rescue teams are pumping water out of the shaft in which five workers are trapped.

The situation follows a mud rush incident which happened on Tuesday.

Communication with the trapped workers has since been lost.

The Sol Plaatje Municipality says its emergency services are ready to assist.

Municipal communications manager Thabo Mothibi says, “The Sol Plaatje Emergency Services remains on high alert, having responded to an early morning emergency call reporting a mud rush incident. The Sol Plaatje Emergency Services will forever dutifully provide support. [Municipality] is prepared to render additional assistance should additional resources or interventions be required.”
