NUM workers down tools at Impala Platinum in Rustenburg
Over a thousand members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have embarked on a strike action at Impala Platinum’s Shaft Number 1 in Rustenburg.
They are demanding recognition of their union by the company providing services to Impala.
It is reported that the company has a closed shop agreement with another union, which means no other union will be recognised at the mine.
The Deputy Chairperson of NUM in Rustenburg, Wageng Mochwaedi, says, “It is our firm belief that Impala, as the principal operation, is influencing service providers to deny workers their lawful rights. In this freedom month, of course, members remain resolute and will not retreat until their constitutional and labour rights are fully recognised. The struggle continues until the might of the law is met.”
Impala and the Triple M management are yet to comment.
