SARS case against Tom Moyane postponed to Tuesday
The case between the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and its former commissioner, Tom Moyane, has been put on hold.
The matter was stood down at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court because Moyane’s legal counsel is sick.
SARS is trying to recover R400 000 in costs from Moyane relating to litigation and travel that were heavily criticised by the Nugent Commission of Inquiry.
The costs relate to a 2017 trip to Russia taken by Moyane in which no report on the purpose of the visit exists.
The commission was also critical of litigation pursued under Moyane’s leadership concerning allegations contained in two books.
It found that some of the legal action appeared to advance personal interests and discourage scrutiny into the revenue service rather than serve the interests of SARS.
The case is expected to resume on Tuesday.
