Human Settlements targets eradication of almost 7 000 mud houses this financial year
Minister of Human Settlements Thembi Simelane has tabled the budget vote for the department in Parliament for the 2026/27 financial year.
The department has been given R26.972 billion budget from the fiscus for the current financial year.
The minister says the targets include among others, 2 000 housing units and the registration of about 20 000 title deeds for eligible beneficiaries.
She says conditional grant funding will receive R23.6 billion and this amount will represent 87% annual allocation.
“We must eradicate no less than 6 950 mud houses. We must deliver no less than 7 044 veteran housing units and 11 215 solar installations to ensure that energy resilience for our beneficiaries is achieved. Despite several challenges we have encountered in the financial year, we are comforted by the significant strides we made in some of our programmes. This includes achieving 40% of MTDP targets in the delivery of title deeds. When I started, some naysayers were saying we are at zero and we will remain at zero. But today we are at 48%.”
Meanwhile, Simelane says her department is optimistic that it will be able to meet targets set in the building of RDP houses in this current financial year.
She says her department remains committed to restoring dignity to beneficiaries through the delivery of sustainable human settlements.
