A man has been arrested for alleged drug dealing at Cape Town International Airport after police allegedly discovered more than 50 kilograms of suspected khat concealed in his luggage.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut says officers were conducting patrols in the Central Terminal Building when they received information about a suspicious individual at a departure counter.

Traut says officers approached the man and conducted a search, during which they found the suspected khat hidden in three suitcases.

The street value of the seized substance has not yet been determined.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court soon.

Traut says the arrest highlights the efforts of border policing officers to combat drug-related crime.

“The arrest of a suspect found in possession of more than 50 kilograms of suspected khat at Cape Town International Airport demonstrates the vigilance of our border policing members and their dedication to combating drug-related crime.

“We will continue to disrupt criminal activities that threaten the safety and well-being of our communities.”
