Over 600 arrested in NCape as police shut down illegal liquor outlets

More than 600 suspects have been arrested across the Northern Cape for various offences, including murder, assault, burglary, dealing in and possession of drugs, and contraventions of immigration legislation.

The suspects were arrested across the province’s five districts during the ongoing Operation Shanela 2.

Provincial police spokesperson Molefi Shemane says police also conducted compliance inspections at formal and informal businesses, resulting in the closure of more than 20 unlicensed liquor outlets for non-compliance.

Shemane says, “Provincial multi-disciplinary teams were deployed across the province to reinforce district operations and increase the police presence through additional boots on the ground. High-density Operation Shanela 2 activities identified crime hotspots through disruptive actions aimed at reducing contact and property-related crimes.”
