A 39-year-old Malawian bus driver accused of smuggling explosives is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrates’ Court in Limpopo on Wednesday morning.

Samson Tonne faces charges of smuggling and illegal possession of explosives after his arrest last month at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

The bus Tonne was driving was intercepted at the border post towards the end of June after travelling from Malawi.

Border Management Authority (BMA) officers inspected the luggage on board and discovered a large consignment of explosive cables, which are classified as explosives under South African law. The cables, valued at approximately R100 000, were concealed inside a bag of rice.

Tonne made his first court appearance more than a week ago, where the matter was postponed for profiling. The case returns to court on Wednesday morning.
