Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says there is currently no threat to South Africa’s fuel supply.

The main concern is the potential impact of the conflict in the Middle East  on fuel prices rather than fuel availability.

Speaking in the National Assembly during the Economic Cluster question session on Wednesday, Mantashe said the country has crude oil reserves sufficient for 30 days, while Sasol has adequate coal reserves to support fuel production.

He says, “The question of the disruption in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz by the way does have a direct impact on our supply and the cost of the petroleum, but up to now – there is no threat of shortage of supply, the biggest threat is the pricing.”
