Municipal Workers Union SAMWU says its members employed by the City of Johannesburg are being kept on incorrect salary scales, despite an agreement with the City to address pay disparities through a R5.4 billion allocation.

The union says the City has since proposed paying R1.2 billion from April next year.

Members took their protest onto the M1 Freeway earlier Monday after waiting for the City’s executive leadership to address them.

SAMWU also alleges that some of its protesting members were injured after being shot at by police using rubber bullets.

SAMWU Regional Chairperson Lebohang Ndawo, “They promised that by September they are going to be having sold a few assets and they would make part payment towards that issue of addressing the salary disparities that you have. But till today, what we have received was an offer from the City and the City was saying, now we are only going to pay you next year in April R1.2 billion and that the balance would be staggered around for another two to three years, which then meant they are now changing from the agreement that we have.”
