George building collapse report to be made public once concluded – SABC News

The National Minister of Human Settlements Thembi Simelane says all recommendations in the final report into last year’s deadly George building collapse in the Western Cape, will be implemented.

Thirty-four people died and several others were injured in the collapse.

The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) report suggests that several procedures were not followed. Simelane said once the report is completed, they will refer recommendations to law enforcement authorities for possible criminal charges.

The report will also be made public once concluded. A separate report by the Western Cape government that was concluded in January was not made public.

Authorities said this was done so that any criminal proceedings and SAPS investigations would not be compromised.

Last month, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde also said criminal proceedings may ensue following the completion of the report.

He handed over the report to Western Cape police commissioner Thembisile Patekile in late January.
