China calls Vance ‘ignorant and disrespectful’ over peasant remark – SABC News

China says it is surprising and saddening to hear “such ignorant and disrespectful” remarks from US Vice President JD Vance, Chinese foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

This comes as a response to Vance’s comments on Chinese workers as “peasants.”

“We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture,” Vance said on Fox News.

“China’s position on China-US trade relations has been made very clear.

It is surprising and saddening to hear such ignorant and disrespectful remarks from this Vice President,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said during the daily news briefing.

Meanwhile, United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told senators on Tuesday that US companies could feel pain from reworking supply chains after President Donald Trump announced his global tariff program.

Greer, who oversees the tariff implementation, told the Senate Finance Committee that US companies should prepare to rework their supply chains for the future and source materials domestically, if needed.

“We can’t keep doing the same thing we always did and if companies are having trouble adjusting their supply chain, which are very sensitive to, we have to deal,” Greer said, “We can’t do nothing for four years.”
