Gauteng govt intends to invoke Transport Act to address taxi violence – SABC News
Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela intends to invoke the National Land Transport Act as a measure to deal with escalating taxi violence incidents.
Section 91 of the Act empowers the MEC to suspend taxi operations by closing the ranks or routes or revoking or amending operating licences.
This follows a fatal shooting of three officials from the Soweto taxi group, the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (Wata), in Mofolo on Monday.
Last month alone, 11 taxi operators were gunned down in Katlehong on the East Rand.
Diale-Tlabela says those behind the Soweto killings must be apprehended.
She says, “Somebody must be arrested and that somebody must be known. That is why we are calling all associations to come on board including all these men in the industry to say ‘enough is enough. We have heard enough and it seems there is no solution’.”
Diale-Tlabela will hold a media briefing and a prayer session in Dube, Soweto this morning.
