Mabuyane condemns violent protest at Walter Sisulu University – SABC News
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has condemned the violent protest at Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha, which resulted in the death of one student, while others were left injured.
The incident took place on Tuesday morning as students were protesting over numerous issues, which include the non-maintenance of residences.
It’s alleged that the residence manager fired shots at the protesting students. One suspect, believed to be the residence manager, has been arrested.
As provincial government spokesperson, Kuselwa Rantjie explains, the premier has urged all stakeholders to work together to find a lasting solution to the matter.
“The Premier has appealed to the vice chancellor of Walter Sisulu University to expedite efforts to resolve the matter that led to the strike, placing the well-being and safety of students, staff, and the broader community at the forefront. Premier Mabuyane further urged the university management to act swiftly in addressing these issues in line with the directives issued by the university council. Premier Mabuyane extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of the student who tragically passed away and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured students.”
