Eskom confident of meeting winter peak demands – SABC News

Eskom says it currently has sufficient electricity capacity to sustain the grid during the upcoming winter months.

Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane says that despite the recent implementation of load shedding, the power utility is now in a strong position and is well prepared for the increased demand for electricity during winter.

Marokane presented Eskom’s State of South Africa’s Electricity System address during the ENLIT Africa conference in Cape Town.

“We’ll go comfortably to about 46 gigawatts of storage capacity. The availability is probably 60/65. So, you are not really having maximum utilisation of your stored capacity. What is key is for us to be able to meet peak demands in winter, which tend to shoot up to 33/33,5 gigawatts of capacity and we’ll use all our technologies available including using our peaking stations, the diesel consumption stations for that hour,” says Marokane.
