Motorist to stand trial in Kimberley for death of 3 people in 2024 – SABC News

The Kimberley Magistrate’s Court has set aside three days from the 7th to the 9th of July for the trial of Collen Mhlanga.

Mhlanga, a Zimbabwean national, is accused of killing three people on June 30, 2024 including two youth from Patriotic Alliance (PA), when his bakkie crashed into their taxi. He had earlier hit and killed a promising cricketer, Omphile Jonas.

During his appearance in court today, Mhlanga pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide and contravention of the Immigration Act.

He was previously charged with driving without a licence, drunken driving, being unlawfully in the country and murder.

Kenneth Booysen, the father of one of the deceased PA members, says they are seeking justice.

“Why did he drive away from the first scene? His intentions were to flee the country. He drove into that kombi that the Patriotic Alliance youth were in. The other occupants who were there said they are still suffering physically. None of them is alright because of the impact this has had on them. This matter must be televised so that South Africa can see what these foreigners are doing in our country.”
