Durban's talented dance crew prepares for the United Dance Organisation World Championships
A Durban dance crew is hoping to emulate its past success at the United Dance Organisation, 20th anniversary World Championships that will be held in England in August.
This prestigious event will attract participants from across the world, showcasing their skills in the genres of Street Dance, including Breaking, Hip Hop, and other Street Dance Genres.
Sanusha Govender, secretary of the Dance Sport Club League KwaZulu-Natal, explained that they started the dance sport school league in 2016 and have been diligently representing the province and country for the past nine years.
Govender said the dancers represented KZN in Cape Town last year, and they represented South Africa in Blackpool, England, last August. In addition to their achievements, they received their Protea colours for representing SA.
She said the children did extremely well, with Makhosazane Zuma from Sherwood Primary School winning the title of under-13 intermediate World Champion, while Smangaliso Pedro and Makhosane Zuma won silver for under-13 duos. They are the current world champions in their age category.
“We have been selected to represent South Africa once again, at the United Dance Organisation, 20th anniversary World Championships. We were able to compete in England last year based on sponsorships. Our team of kids and two coaches would like to make a humble request for assistance. The coaches require their flights sponsored,” Govender said.
Her team will wear various kits over the five days at the event, which will be held at Winter Gardens.
According to Govender, there will be more than 50 countries at the event, and thousands of spectators will attend the event over five days, which would benefit corporates willing to sponsor the team.
“We have a total of 18 athletes, most of whom are school learners. Last year was quite stressful due to the costs involved in making the opportunity a reality for KZN. We ask for assistance to be able to represent our province and country once again in England,” Govender explained.
