Hundreds of people dressed in black have taken part in a “silent solidarity walk,” at Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The event, organised by Mothers for Gaza and supported by civil society organisations, aimed to express grief and solidarity around civilians affected in the Israel-Hamas war.

Participants walked in silence from the Green Point Lighthouse to the Pavilion, urging the global community to prioritise human life and justice.

“Today’s walk is to really show our outrage and our grief at what is happening to Palestinian people; the majority of whom are children being killed. We must see and value human life, whether it’s in our country or in other countries,” says a participant.

The participant says, “The focus this group is trying to showcase is the fact that there are defenceless civilians and mothers who are being torn away from their kids. It’s heart-breaking to see and it’s something that we should all be able to relate to. We are all mothers, we are all daughters, we are all sons, we are all brothers, we are all sisters,” adds another participant.

“It’s bringing an element of relatability through solidarity,” another participant says.
