Floyd Shivambu's Thursday media briefing 'not an MK one'

A media briefing scheduled for Thursday by axed uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Secretary General Floyd Shivambu has not been sanctioned by the party.

That’s the official word from party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela.

“We have not been made aware of this briefing which uses MK brand colours or the announcement by Floyd to hold this briefing. It has not been sanctioned by the party and as the official spokesperson I was not made aware of this. We will have to wait and see what the briefing is about before we proceed any further,” Ndhlela told IOL.

There are strong indications that Shivambu is expected to announce his resignation from MK at the media briefing – which is why he is holding it in his personal capacity and has not informed MK, where he still remains an ordinary member.

Asked if he was indeed planning to announce his exit from the party, a spokesperson for the briefing, Nolubabalo Mcinga replied curtly: “I am not going to give that information, you guys have to attend the briefing and hear what Floyd has to say.”

Shivambu’s anticipated resignation from MK comes ten months after his spectacular and sudden resignation from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party which he founded with Julius Malema.

And, like his anticipated resignation from MK, was done suddenly and without much notice to the party.

However, despite being catapulted to the position of Secretary General of MK, he failed to win the hearts of those within the party – except for a few loyal supporters. Shortly after being axed recently as Secretary General, he was expected to head to parliament, but his name was not included in the list.

Shivambu has been touted as a divisive force by many MK insiders, often clashing with many party members and leaders within the inner circle. These include daughter of Jacob Zuma, Duduzile and other party leaders. Still, Shivambu remained, saying he would never leave MK.

That may change when he announces his next move at the media briefing.
