United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his grave alarm at the use of force by the United States against Iran.

This after US President Donald Trump said his country had completed successful precision strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, completely obliterating them.

In a statement, Secretary-General Guterres called the US action a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge and a direct threat to international peace and security.

He said there was a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control, with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world, as he called on UN member states to de-escalate and to uphold their obligations under the UN Charter and other rules of international law.

Guterres further warned that at this perilous hour, it was critical to avoid a spiral of chaos, asserting that there was no military solution and the only path forward was diplomacy and peace.

Meanwhile, Trump says the United States has completed a successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran.

He spoke at the White House days after saying he would make a decision on whether to strike in Iran within two weeks. He called it three precision strikes on nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, referring to Iran as the leading state sponsor of terror.

“Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horribly destructive enterprise. Our objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror. Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success; Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated,” says Trump.
