Skills programme to empower Mahikeng youth to start small businesses – SABC News

An organisation called Baithaopi Free Skills Development in Moshawane near Mahikeng has volunteered to transfer skills to interested residents in the province, particularly the youth. With the province currently leading with the unemployment rate in the country, the organisation says the aim of this free skill transfer is to train and motivate young people to open small businesses.

Aubrey Mncedi George has been installing DSTV for over a decade. Coupled with other skills he has, like carpentry and fridge repairs, he decided to open an organisation that will provide free skills to those interested. His wish is to ensure that young people can open small businesses.

“I saw the need for transferring these skills to the youth because I saw many challenges regarding the youth being unemployed. So, we as a team decided to give the skills to the youth … those who are interested in learning the skills that we have, so that they can be able to feed themselves with those skills,” said George.

George says their stumbling block is registering with relevant authorities for accreditation.

“We are providing DSTV skills, we are providing hair cuts, relaxer, braids, nails, cooking, painting and aluminium windows. My challenge is that we have been receiving those who are in need of certificates. So, right now, we don’t have access to give those people certificates because we have not yet registered,” he added.
