R3,000 bribe to free impounded taxis: Court interpreter’s fraudulent scheme uncovered

A court interpreter will be on the other end of the stick as he makes his first appearance in the George Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old man was arrested by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as Hawks), faces charges of corruption, fraud, forgery, and uttering.

The provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, said the crime is alleged to have taken place in March 2024.

“His arrest followed after allegations that during March 2024, he approached two taxi owners and introduced himself as someone with authority from the court. He allegedly made a promise to assist them with the release of their impounded taxis at the cost of R3,000 for each taxi,” Vukubi said.

According to information gathered from the preliminary investigation, an agreement was reached, and the suspect completed charge sheets that he allegedly stole from the Thembalethu Court and forged the magistrate’s signature.

“He is expected to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court on July 2, 2025,” Vukubi said.
