Portfolio Committee says medical parole system to be reviewed – SABC News
Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services, Kgomotso Ramolobeng says the committee has decided to review the medical parole system.
Briefing the media on the committee’s oversight duties at Parliament, Ramolobeng says there are ongoing discussions with the minister in charge to consider the review of the medical parole system following repeated calls from various sectors of society.
She says the parole board has so far received a number of medical parole applications, including applications from inmates who are serving life terms.
“The medical parole for lifers between the third of July 2024 to the 21 July 2025 and this is for lifers. The total applications received were 16. Among those 16, only three were approved. And 13 of those were not approved. And medical parole for those who are not serving as lifers, a total of 29 medical parole applications were received, 23 were approved of which six were not approved.”‘
