Weather alert: KwaZulu-Natal braces for disruptive rainfall on Saturday

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a weather warning for KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) as the region braces for level 2 disruptive rainfall on Saturday.

This weather event is expected to impact daily life significantly, particularly in the eThekwini area and along the Southcoast, where isolated showers are forecasted to commence in the morning and persist into the evening.

As the rainfall sets in, residents are warned of the potential for serious disruptions, including the flooding of low-lying roads, bridges, and both formal and informal settlements. These hazards pose a significant risk to infrastructure and could lead to dangerous conditions for drivers, necessitating an urgent call for caution on the roads.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate said it will be actively monitoring the situation in close collaboration with emergency services. They are prepared to respond as necessary to any resulting emergencies from this anticipated weather event.

For those living in flood-prone areas, including many informal settlements, taking necessary precautions is vital to ensure personal safety. The failure to heed these warnings could result in severe consequences, including potential loss of property and, more importantly, endangerment to lives.

Meanwhile motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when navigating wet roads, maintaining a safe following distance to ensure adequate reaction time in unpredictable driving conditions.

The municipality has warned the public to avoid crossings over overflowing rivers and streams, a common risk during periods of heavy rainfall.

As the weather is subject to change, residents are encouraged to stay alert for updates from the SAWS, who will provide timely adjustments to the warnings as necessary.
