Springbok fullback Aphelele Fassi expects a fierce test of skill and smarts against Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

Fassi has fond memories of the last time Georgia played in South Africa. He made his Bok debut on the wing on that day, and crashed over in the corner just five minutes into the game with his first touch of the ball. He delivered an assured performance at Loftus that night.

The 11-Test fullback returns to the No 15 jersey after getting a hit-out against the Barbarians in Cape Town. While that may have been a low-pressure match, Fassi is under no illusion about what’s coming his way in Nelspruit.

“I’m expecting a physical battle. I think their backline is more direct and more more physical in the wider channel, the breakdown, the tackle and every aspect of the game. They’ll try to be physical, but I also feel like they’re a team that likes to play around with the ball and a team that is expansive. Obviously, with the type of players that they have, many who play in the Top 14, I think they’ll definitely bring a good mix.”

While known for his silky skills and natural attacking flair, Fassi says Test rugby requires more than just instinct – it’s about timing, control and winning the right battles.

“I just look at the flow of the game and how the things are happening. Obviously in a Test match, you need to win certain battles and every battle that I try to put myself into, is a battle I want to win and put my forwards in front. I like to play what’s in front of me, but at the same time being cautious of how how the game is flowing.”
