JMPD monitors protest over power outage in Bertrams – SABC News
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) has warned motorists of traffic disruptions in the Bezuidenhout Valley area, east of the Johannesburg CBD. This is due to an ongoing service delivery-related protest.
Around 200 protesters have blocked parts of Albertina Sisulu Road, from Bertrams toward Darras Centre, over a months-long power outage.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says officers are on the scene managing traffic at affected intersections, including 2nd and 5th Street, as well as 7th and 8th Avenue.
JMPD officers are currently on scene managing traffic in response to a protest.
“Protestors are burning tyres in the affected area, though they have informed JMPD officials that their intentions are non-violent and their primary demand is the restoration of electricity. Motorists are strongly advised to seek alternative routes, exercise extreme caution when approaching the area, follow directions from JMPD officers on the scene, and anticipate significant delays,” Fihla explains.
