Communities urged to report drug abuse cases where kids are at risk – SABC News

Save the Children South Africa is concerned about toddlers being coerced into using drugs in communities.

A woman will appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court this week on charges of attempted murder and drug abuse.

After a video went viral showing her offering her four-year-old son a smoke from a mandrax pipe. Three others have also been charged in the case.

Child Protection Lead at Save the Children, Margaret Zulu, says communities need to report suspicious behaviour if they think a child is being subjected to drug abuse.

“This is not only a breach of the child’s right to protection from harm, as outlined in the Children’s Act, as you know. But also, as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger community vigilance, support systems for vulnerable families and also enforcement of child protection laws.”
