Police in Mossel Bay, Western Cape, say they have arrested a suspect with abalone with an estimated value of R13 000 in his possession.

Police spokesperson Chris Spies says Da Gamaskop officers made the arrest after a tip-off from the public. He says they confronted two men and seized a backpack with 46 units of abalone.

One suspect was arrested while the other fled.

Spies says the suspect remains in police custody and will appear in court once charged. He is facing charges of unlawful possession of abalone, resisting arrest and common assault. His alleged accomplice is yet to be arrested.
