Following the powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka coast on Wednesday, the region has been rocked by a series of aftershocks, with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) forecasting more aftershocks on the way this week.

According to the USGS, the recent earthquake was not an isolated event, having followed 10 days of 50 magnitude 5.0 or larger earthquakes, including a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on 20 July.

“The sequence remains active as scientists monitor ongoing aftershocks, including M6.9 and M6.2 quakes,” said the USGS in a statement on July 31. “As the Kamchatka sequence continues, scientists maintain their vigilant monitoring, providing ongoing updates and analysis.”

Live USGS data shows that the Kamchatka coast has continued to be hit by several aftershocks as high as magnitude 6.8 on Sunday, 3 August. USGS scientists predicted a 34% chance of aftershocks of magnitude 7 or larger in the seven days after the large magnitude 8.8 earthquake on Wednesday.
