Two suspects wanted for police officer murder shot dead in KZN

Two men believed to be behind the killing of a police officer were shot dead during a gun battle with police in Inanda on Tuesday night.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal police, the suspects, aged 20 and 21, were wanted for the murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and a series of house and armed robberies.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers were acting on intelligence that led them to a house in the Maplazini area.

“When police arrived at the house, they introduced themselves as police officers and instructed the suspects to open the door,” said Netshiunda.

“The suspects responded with gunshots towards police officers from inside the house and police were left with no choice but to return fire in self-defence.”

During the shootout, both suspects were fatally wounded. A firearm with its serial number filed off was recovered from the scene.

“No police officer was injured during the shootout,” Netshiunda added.
