Tragic shooting in Lotus River claims one life and injures four
Police have urged the public to come forward with information following a shooting incident in Lotus River, Grassy Park, earlier today (Thursday), which left one person dead and four others injured.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said they responded to the complaint of a shooting in Fifth Avenue, Lotus River.
A 20-year-old man was found deceased on arrival at the scene, said Twigg.
“Four other males between 20 and 72, who sustained gunshot wounds, were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and arrests are yet to be made. Murder and attempted murder cases were registered for investigation,” said Twigg.
It was not confirmed whether the shooting is suspected to be gang-related.
Ward 65 councillor, Donovan Nelson, who expressed concern for the safety of residents, called for urgent action against gang violence.
“This brazen act of violence, carried out in broad daylight, has once again highlighted the urgent need for decisive action to address gang-related shootings in the Grassy Park precinct… Communities such as Lotus River, Parkwood, Ottery, and Pelican Park are living under constant threat from criminal elements who show no regard for human life.”
Nelson said that in response to the gang violence, a community petition has been launched calling for a public meeting to be convened with the local CPF and SAPS, and has secured a City of Cape Town venue where the meeting could take place.
“The goal is clear: we need SAPS to present a transparent and detailed plan for increasing resources, improving visible policing, and restoring public confidence. This must happen with urgency and with full community involvement.
“Our residents deserve to feel safe in their homes, on their streets, and at their places of work. I will continue to push for immediate action and will work with all stakeholders to ensure that safety and order are restored,” said Nelson.
